Tile Upgrade with Alexander James

I was itching to change our girls’ shared bathroom, and was excited to do a tile upgrade with Alexander James! This bathroom makeover was totally transformed with their gorgeous tile.

Thank you to Alexander James for providing the tile for my bathroom makeover! All opinions are my own.

Our girls’ bathroom started out as a basic builder grade bathroom. It hadn’t been updated in almost 20 years, so it was time for an upgrade!

I was so excited to upgrade EVERYTHING in this bathroom, but especially the tile. The basic square shaped beige/pink floor tiles and square white counter tiles had their time, but it was time to go.

When we moved in 2 years ago I knew I wanted to replace the tile, and I was SO excited to get demo started! The countertops were pretty straightforward for demo, but the floors and mortar underneath the floor tiles were a bit more challenging.

After everything was removed I got to work on the new countertop. I chose a butcher block countertop for the counter. We cut the holes for the sinks and then I sanded, stained and sealed it before attaching it from below the vanity.

New Tile Backsplash

Next I moved on to the tile backsplash! This part of my design was my favorite, because I knew it would have a big visual impact on the room. I chose the Artisan Black tile from Alexander James, and used Mussel Bound to attach it to the wall.

First I installed all the full tiles I could by sticking them to the Mussel Bound, and then moved on to cutting the partial tiles. This was my first time using a tile scorer and cutter, and it was actually really fun!

After the tiles were installed I used a dark grey grout to match the color of the darker Artisan tiles. Then after applying the grout with a grout float, I cleaned the tiles with a clean wet sponge to clean the grout off of the face of the tiles.

Installing Tile Flooring

For the floors I picked out the Makoto Kuroi Black Hexagon tile from Alexander James. I love the modern shape and the black color is so gorgeous!

Nic installed the floor tile, dry fitting the tiles first to make sure he had his cuts planned out. It also helped to visualize how the tiles would align with the bathtub, vanity, and doorways.

We used the same dark grey grout as on the backsplash wall, and it coordinated perfectly with the black tile. I love how the Makoto Kuroi tiles contrast against the light pink color on the walls.

The result is a beautiful updated bathroom that has me stopping to gaze at it every time I walk by! I can’t get over how different it looks with the beautiful modern tile. It has completely changed the room and gives it a modern touch.
