Desk Glow Up – ORC Week 3

Today I’m sharing my most recent project for the One Room Challenge, a desk glow up transformation! I love giving furniture makeovers, and this one is SO good.

WEEK 1 | WEEK 2 | WEEK 3 | WEEK 4 | WEEK 5 | WEEK 6

The One Room Challenge is such a fun event that happens twice a year. Both featured designers and guest participants come together to share a room makeover done in 8 weeks. It is such a fun place to find inspiration and to share the love of design!

For this Fall One Room Challenge I’m taking on my teen daughter’s bedroom. I shared my mood board & room makeover plans, and some progress for week 2.

The past week I have been finishing up painting the walls, painting her desk, and starting some of the wallpaper for the feature wall! All of my items arrived for the room this week as well, so I’m getting SO excited for this teen room makeover to come together.

Desk Glow Up

My daughter’s desk was passed down from family, and I gave it a small makeover a few years ago with some chalk paint. It was good for a few years but the paint finish had seen better days!

I wanted to give it a moody makeover with one of my favorite paint colors: Ash from Fusion Mineral Paint. This dark charcoal grey is just beautiful, and would have contrast against the white walls in her bedroom.

Here is the before of the desk:

Why I Love Fusion Mineral Paint

There are so many reasons why I love Fusion Mineral Paint, but here are my top 3:

  1. Minimal/No Prep Needed. In most cases, I just need to give my piece a good cleaning to remove dust/dirt before getting started.
  2. Zero VOC. I can paint my pieces indoors without any harsh fumes or chemicals being released.
  3. Built-In Top Coat. This is a big one, because it is such a time saver! The built-in topcoat is durable and makes the painting process quick.

After I cleaned the desk, I placed some flattened cardboard boxed underneath (my favorite way to protect my floors while painting furniture), and got to painting!

I have learned that to get the smoothest finish, I paint the edges/sides of the drawer fronts first, then going over the front with long light strokes. This will reduce any brush strokes and create a beautiful finish. You could also go over with a high quality roller, but I usually stick with my Fusion brush.

The color Ash has such great coverage and there were areas that only needed one coat! There were a couple spots that needed a second coat, and after that was done I left it alone for a week to let it cure.

New Hardware From Schuab

I was so excited to partner with Schaub on this room makeover, and picked out these gorgeous pulls with backplates for the desk makeover! The brass pops against the dark grey paint, making them stand out even more.

These solid brass Pub House pulls elevate this piece so much. They are so substantial and bring this room to a whole new level!

The Desk Reveal:

I am LOVING this desk makeover SO MUCH! It is exactly what I had envisioned for the room, and brings some sophistication to the space…
