It’s time for another round of the One Room Challenge, and today I’m sharing my master bedroom makeover plans! I’ve been wanting to give our master bedroom a makeover since we moved in over a year ago. Now it’s time to make it happen and start a whole new batch of DIY projects!

The One Room Challenge
The One Room Challenge is such a fun way to makeover a space in your home. This year we have 8 weeks to complete our room makeovers. It is such a motivation to be working on a room alongside so many other participants. And the time crunch gives you the drive to get things done!
You can head to the One Room Challenge blog to read more about the challenge, where there are a group of featured designers and a group of guest participants. It is such a great source of interior inspiration for any room in your home! I’ve participated 4 times before (like my most recent girls’ room makeover and my kitchen makeover!) and every time I finish one I’m thrilled to start another challenge!
This year I’m taking on our master bedroom where there is lots of room for improvement! We haven’t really touched the room at all (besides replacing a broken ceiling fan and hanging up some curtains) so there are lots of projects to be done!
Master Bedroom Design Plans
It’s time to share the before photos of our bedroom! The walls are a taupe color and the carpet is brown as well. We don’t have the budget to replace the floors yet, but adding an area rug would be a great way to change up the look of the flooring!

We did replace the old ceiling fan with this modern one, and added this modern black curtain rod above the windows to hang some curtains. With my new design plan for the room, we will be adding a new bed, mattress, accent lighting, and accent furniture. I’ll be changing the furniture arrangement as well so that our bed will be on the largest wall instead of backing up to the windows.
The 2 largest DIY projects that we will be taking on in the room is a feature wall on the largest wall behind our bed, and building a barn door that will lead to our bathroom. We have done feature walls before (like this board and batten entryway) so we have some experience. This one will be a grid wall which will take some more time and measuring, but it will make such a statement!
We are excited to build a barn door that will lead to our bathroom. We have just the amount of room we need for the barn door to slide against the wall, plus enough room above the doorway for the hardware. I’m still debating the color and finish of the door, but I know it will be such a fun project that will have a big impact!
Choosing Paint Colors
I have been wanting to paint the accent wall a dark color for some contrast. In my Instagram stories I took a poll on my possible color choices for the wall, and I have narrowed it down to a dark grey! I think this will keep it neutral so that I can play with different colors in the room with accent pillows, blankets, etc.
I’ll be painting the other walls in the room a white color – I’m thinking the color Pure White from Sherwin Williams. I used Pure White on my kitchen cabinets and love the soft white color that isn’t too bright. For the doors and trim I’ll be using a brighter white to have some contrast against the Pure White walls.
For this project I am using my favorite paintbrushes again – from Zibra painting! I tried their brushes last year for my kitchen makeover and fell in love with how well-made their brushes are. They hold a ton of paint, they are easy to hold, and the application is SO smooth.

I love that they come in a variety of shapes and sizes so that you can have the perfect brush for your specific project. They sent me their Best Of Zibra paintbrush kit that includes a round brush, square brush, triangle brush, palm pro brush, and chiseled wedge. My accent grid wall will entail a lot of painting, so I’ll be using these brushes a ton in the next few weeks!
