Dresser Makeover With Fusion Mineral Paint – ORC Week 3

Dresser Makeover with Fusion Mineral Paint - from A Heart Filled Home

I just finished my latest project for the One Room Challenge – a dresser makeover with fusion mineral paint! Using some of my favorite furniture paint, I was able to totally transform this piece of furniture!

Thank you to Fusion Mineral Paint for supplying the materials for this makeover.

This makeover turned out SO well! I wanted a modern updated dresser for their bedroom and it turned out just as I was imagining. I’m so happy with the results!

It is week 3 of the One Room Challenge hosted by Linda Weinstein, and I’m excited with my progress so far. First I shared my plans and mood board for the room, then I shared how to create an accent wall with wallpaper. I’ve also finished painting the room, and now I’ve completed this dresser makeover!

I painted this garage sale dresser a little over 3 years ago right before my youngest daughter was born. It was perfect for her nursery and brought in a feminine touch to the room. We have moved a couple times since then, and it’s gotten some wear and tear over the years. It needed a fresh coat of paint and I was excited to mix things up with a new modern neutral color.

As I was browsing the Fusion Mineral Paint site I saw a beautiful dark grey color called Ash, and knew it would be perfect. I wanted to pair it with a brass or gold color for the pulls to really transform the look.

How To Paint A Dresser

The first step was to clean the surface of the dresser. I wiped it down with a damp towel to clean it and make sure I would have good adhesion. If you have any dust or dirt on your furniture it will prevent paint from adhering well.

Next I added a coat of Ultra Grip. This helps your paint adhere better to the surface you are painting. Because I had added a layer of tough coat to the dresser a few years ago, parts of it were still pretty slick. Adding the Ultra Grip helps adhesion so your paint will stay put, and not slip off.

Then I added 2 coats of Fusion Mineral Paint in the color Ash. This furniture paint is one of my favorites because of the thickness of the paint and how smoothly it applies. It does have a built-in topcoat that helps create a nice smooth finish.

TIP: When applying your paint, apply it in smaller sections because it dries pretty quickly. After you have finished applying it in one section, lightly graze the surface with very light pressure to smooth out any visible brush strokes. This will prevent seeing any uneven paint brush strokes and leave a beautiful finish.

After I applied 2 coats of paint I added 2 coats of the Tough Coat. Since this dresser gets a lot of use with little hands, I wanted to make sure to protect my beautiful paint job!

The last step was to add the gold pulls I found at Target in the dollar spot. I love the modern shape, and the contrast of the gold against the dark grey color. I’m so happy with how this came together! What do you think of this transformation?
