Shared Girls Room Makeover Design Plan – ORC Week 1

ORC shared girls room makeover design plans

Today I’m sharing my plans for my daughters’ shared girls room makeover! This is week one of this year’s Spring One Room Challenge, and I’m excited to get started.

Twice a year the One Room Challenge happens with both featured designers and guest participants. I’m excited to be joining up as a guest participant and give my girls’ shared room a makeover!

We moved into our new home last year, but I haven’t done much decorating in my kids’ rooms. The time has finally come to start a makeover in one of their rooms!

Shared Girls Room Makeover

This particular room did start with one beautiful feature .. it already had some gorgeous crown moulding! Out of all the homes we have lived in, we have never had crown moulding surprisingly. I’m so excited to have it already installed.

Let’s jump right into it with a before photo! I took this photo right before we moved in last year. There were some shelves on the wall near the window, but I ended up removing them after making plans for the room makeover. Now I am ready to add my personal style and touch to their room!

Girls Shared Bedroom Design Plans

Now I’m going to share my design plans for the room! This step is so fun, because once I put all of the design elements into a mood board I can see my vision come to life!

Wallpaper Accent Wall

My first design element I picked for the room is some gorgeous traditional wallpaper from PhotoWall. I picked the pattern called Fauna, and it is the perfect whimsical touch for my girls’ bedroom makeover!

I want the wallpaper to bring in some pattern and subtle color to the room, while also being fun. I thought this pattern was perfect with the sweet little animals that my girls can find on the wall!

Painting The Walls

I’ll be painting the walls in a neutral color that coordinates with the wallpaper. The main color in the wallpaper is a grayish slate blue color, so I picked the color Grey Mist by Behr. I love how it coordinates with the wallpaper color and will bring some interest to the walls (while contrasting against the white crown moulding.

To help me with the painting projects in the room, I’m excited to be partnering with Handy Products! They have some amazing painting accessories that helps the painting process go more smoothly with their helpful products! I am so excited to try their handy paint tray (with handles, a magnet for holding your paint brush, & liners!), handy paint pail (with magnet & removable liners!), and handy roller cup (also with removable liners!).

Adding DIY Window Trim

One project I’ll be tackling in this room for the very first time is window trim! All the windows in our new home do not have window trim or window sills. I love the look of craftsman style window trim, so I’ll be trying my hand at tackling this project myself. I’ll be using this tutorial for window trim from Lauren at Blesser House!

I just started learning how to use a miter saw recently (I’ve been intimidated by power tools for too long!) and I am excited to use it for this project. Adding the window trim will add some much needed character to the room! I will also be removing the wood blinds and replacing them with a wood roman shade instead.

Painting Furniture

I painted an antique twin bed for my oldest daughter 6 years ago, and after moving a couple times it had some chips and wear. To help it coordinate better with my design plan, painting it white will be perfect for the room!

They have a dresser in their room that I painted 3 years ago when my youngest daughter was born, and it too has some wear. I plan to paint both pieces with my favorite furniture paint from Fusion Mineral Paint! Their mineral paint is amazing to work with and has such a smooth finish – with a top coat already mixed in!

New Accent Lighting

For my girls’ room, I want to add some new accent lighting. I found a beautiful plug-in sconce that will go perfectly above my daughter’s twin bed! I chose a polished nickel fixture from Crystorama that I’m excited to add to the room.

Girls Bedroom To-Do List

  • Paint the twin bed

I’m so excited to get to work on this girls room makeover! Come back next week to see which project I’m starting first!
