How To Make A Planter From A Vintage Chair

How to make a planter out of a vintage chair! This is such a great way to re-use a broken chair and give it a new purpose!

A couple months ago I found an adorable pair of vintage chairs at a garage sale for only $5 each! While I was getting ready to photograph the chairs for the “before photo” my daughter climbed onto one of them and broke the seat. I was really bummed at first, but as I brainstormed ideas for the broken chair I came up with a great solution!

After I painted one of the vintage chairs white, I decided to paint the broken chair a different color and turn it into a planter! I had just picked up a large metal bucket for $1.99 at the 99 Cent Store and it happened to be the perfect size for this planter. Sometimes things just fall into place perfectly for a project, and it makes me so happy when it does!

Here are the before photos:

Materials Needed:

  • Chair with a wicker/rattan seat
  • Large Bucket
  • Decor Paint (in the color Jitterbug)
  • Paint brush
  • Scissors
  • Pen
  • Ruler
  • Paper Plate

First I measured the smallest width of the seat where I could see the wood underneath. This is the part of the chair that the bucket will be sitting on, so it needs to be resting on the wood for support.

My chair measured just over 9 inches wide. I grabbed a paper plate to use as template to trace a circle onto the seat. My paper plate just happened to be the perfect width!

After I had my circle traced on the seat I started to cut out my circle with scissors. The seat was pretty easy to cut due to the age of the chair (and the ease of which it was broken!) 😉

Next I gave the chair a good cleaning and a couple coats of paint. I used my favorite oval paint brush and decor paint in the color Jitterbug.

Then I placed my bucket into the seat of the chair and pressed down on the sides of the bucket until it felt secure. I made sure it was resting against the wood of the chair on either side for support. I placed soil and a plant inside, and then I was done!
