Last week I was browsing Facebook Marketplace when I came across the most beautiful vintage sewing cabinet! I was immediately drawn to the curved top and adorable detailed legs. The owner said it was most likely made in the 1940’s, and it is in such great condition! I knew I had to have it and give it a makeover.

It had some discoloration and peeling due to the age of the cabinet. I knew it would look beautiful with a coat of paint! I wanted to keep the top unpainted to show of the true color of the original wood, so I got to work to restore the top with some sanding and hemp oil.
Materials Needed
- Cabinet
- Country Chic Decor Paint (I used the color Jitterbug)
- Clear Coat
- Paintbrush (this oval brush is my favorite!)
- Electric Sander
- Sandpaper
- Hemp Oil
- Towel
Vintage Sewing Cabinet Makeover
First I cleaned the cabinet with a damp towel, and made sure the surface was clean. This didn’t take much time because the cabinet was very clean and kept in great condition. I can tell that it was pretty well taken care of!
Next I gave the bottom of the cabinet 2 coats of Country Chic decor paint in the color Jitterbug. I am so in love with this color! It is the most beautiful dark teal and I want to paint everything in this color now! 🙂
Then I gave the bottom of the cabinet 2 coats of this Clear Coat to protect the paint. If you’ve been following along with me for a while now, you know that this is my very favorite clear coat. It does such a great job and is super safe to use.
I left the top of the cabinet unpainted so that I could restore the top to the original beautiful wood color. The finish was peeling off of the cabinet pretty badly so I needed to do some sanding to get it off. I used this electric sander for the first time and I recommend it. Within a couple minutes I had the top completely sanded and smooth. I used a couple sheets of sandpaper to get to the inner parts of the edges. This was the most difficult part due to the hard to reach space between the edges along the sides. After I was done sanding I cleaned off the surface with a rag to get any remaining dust off.
Next I applied some of this hemp oil using a towel. The color looks dark at first, but will lighten with time. I love that it is all natural and makes the wood look beautiful!
After waiting 12 hours for the oil to dry I was ready to go! I gifted this beautiful table to my Mom for her birthday last weekend. She loves to sew and can use this piece in her sewing room!
