Every time I pass by the unfinished wood decor section at Hobby Lobby, I have to stop and take a glance. I start imagining what I can create from the unfinished wood pieces because there are so many great ones to choose from! On my last trip to Hobby Lobby I decided to get a couple pieces to make a DIY cake stand to display above my kitchen cabinets. By using just 2 items, some glue, and some chalk paint I was able to create a simple and beautiful cake stand!

This project was so simple, easy and budget friendly. My favorite kind of DIY project by far! I love being able to create something beautiful for my home and not need to spend a fortune to do it. This is basically how I have been able to decorate the majority of my home – by creating DIY projects on a budget!
How To Make A Simple DIY Cake Stand
I picked up an unfinished wood candle holder and round plate at Hobby Lobby, used some strong glue that I already had on hand, and used this paint brush and decor paint that I got from Country Chic Paint. With just these few supplies I was ready to get started!
Materials Needed
- Unfinished wood candle holder
- Unfinished wood plate
- Paint brush
- Decor paintΓΒ (I used the color Simplicity)
- Clear coat
- E-6000 Glue
First I started by giving both the candle holder and plate a couple coats of paint. The chalk paint adhered to the wood very nicely and had awesome coverage.
After letting them dry I gave them a couple coats of this clear coat, which I absolutely love because it is VOC free and low odor. It is by far my favorite product for sealing paint because it is so safe, has great coverage, applies easily and protects so well!
After the clear coat was dryΓΒ I glued the two pieces together by applying some of this awesome glue around the top edge of the candle holder, and then placed it on the center of the bottom of the plate. After letting it dry for a few hours it was ready to display!
Wasn’t that easy and simple? I want to create more of these cute DIY cake stands to use in other areas of my home!ΓΒ You could make some of these at varying heights to add some visual interest to a food table, dessert table, or gift table for a party!
I’ll be using this cake stand to use as a decor piece and not for serving food, so I didn’t add anything to make it food safe. However, if you wanted to use this as a serving piece you could cut some wax paper into a circle and place it underneath any goodies that you wanted to serve on top of it!
I hope you enjoyed this fun DIY cake stand tutorial. I had so much fun putting it together!
